IS (India) steel grades

IS 2062 E250/E350, IS 1079, IS 513 …. Issued by BIS. 1 grades and 1 standards are documented so far; each grade links to a full data sheet and a graded cross-reference to the other systems.

Cross-references to other systems

Every IS (India) grade page carries a table of equivalents rated identical / near / functional with the reason. Browse other systems: EN (European) · ASTM / ASME · AISI / SAE · JIS (Japan) · GB/T (China) · DIN (superseded German) · BS (superseded British) · GOST (Russia/CIS).

E-numbers are yield strength in MPa

The Indian structural system is straightforward once the prefix is read. IS 2062 covers hot-rolled structural steel and names grades as E250, E275, E300, E350, E410, E450 — the number is the guaranteed minimum yield in MPa, exactly as in the EN system.

E250 therefore sits beside S235 and A36; E350 beside S355. The older names Fe410 and Fe490 referred to tensile strength and were replaced by the E designations in the 2011 revision, which is a frequent source of confusion on older drawings.

Quality classes carry the impact requirement

Each E grade comes in quality classes A, BR, B0, C, and this is where the real specification lives. A has no impact requirement. BR is tested at room temperature, B0 at 0 °C, C at −20 °C.

So E250A and E250C are the same strength and very different steels for a cold or dynamic application. An order that names only E250 has not specified the toughness, and in practice will be filled with class A.

The sheet and plate standards

Beyond structural sections, the Indian standards a buyer meets most often are IS 1079 for hot-rolled sheet and strip, IS 513 for cold-rolled low-carbon sheet, and IS 277 for galvanized sheet. They map reasonably onto EN 10025, EN 10130 and EN 10346 respectively.

IS 513 uses a D, DD, EDD ladder for formability — ordinary, deep drawing and extra deep drawing — which corresponds to the DC01 to DC06 progression in EN terms.

faq.h

What does E250 mean in IS 2062?

A guaranteed minimum yield strength of 250 MPa. The E prefix marks the grade designation used since the 2011 revision of IS 2062, replacing the older Fe410 style which referred to tensile strength.

Is IS 2062 E250 equivalent to S235?

Close: E250 guarantees 250 MPa yield against 235 for S235. The quality class matters as much as the grade — E250A has no impact requirement while E250C is tested at −20 °C.

What is the difference between Fe410 and E250?

They are the same steel under two naming conventions. Fe410 referred to a tensile strength of 410 MPa; the 2011 revision renamed it E250 after its 250 MPa yield strength.

What do the quality classes A, BR, B0 and C mean?

The impact requirement: A none, BR tested at room temperature, B0 at 0 °C and C at −20 °C. A grade named without a class will normally be supplied as class A.

Which Indian standard covers cold-rolled sheet?

IS 513, which grades formability as D, DD and EDD — ordinary, deep drawing and extra deep drawing. The ladder corresponds broadly to DC01 through DC06 in the EN system.
