S235JR equivalents by system
GradeSystemMatchWhy / differences
St37-2DIN (superseded German)IdenticalDirect successor (1.0038). S235JR guarantees 27 J at +20 °C which St37-2 did not; ordering S235JR always satisfies an St37-2 requirement.
S235JRHEN (European)IdenticalSame steel as flat/long product to EN 10025-2; the H suffix only marks the hollow-section delivery standard.
A36ASTM / ASMENearA36 yield 250 MPa (36 ksi) and Rm 400–550 MPa are slightly higher; no impact requirement. Widely accepted as the US counterpart.
A283 Gr. CASTM / ASMENearYield 205 MPa, Rm 380–515 MPa; plate only, no Charpy requirement.
S235J0EN (European)NearSame chemistry limits with P/S 0.030 %; impact 27 J at 0 °C instead of +20 °C.
S195TEN (European)NearThe strip from which most S195T tube is actually made; S235JR coil certified to EN 10255 requirements.
Q235BGB/T (China)NearGB/T 700 Q235B: yield 235 MPa, Rm 370–500 MPa, 27 J at +20 °C — the closest Chinese match; C max 0.20 %.
St3spGOST (Russia/CIS)NearGOST 380 St3sp (killed): yield 245 MPa ≤ 20 mm, Rm 370–480 MPa; impact tested at +20 °C.
IS 2062 E250 BRIS (India)NearYield 250 MPa, Rm 410 MPa min; BR = impact tested at room temperature.
SS400JIS (Japan)NearJIS G3101 SS400: yield 245 MPa (≤16 mm), Rm 400–510 MPa; no chemistry limits beyond P and S, no impact test.
S275JREN (European)FunctionalNext strength class (275 MPa); substitutes upward for strength but is not identical.
C15EN (European)FunctionalStructural steel of similar carbon; not a case-hardening quality (no hardenability or cleanliness control).
DC01EN (European)FunctionalHot-rolled structural steel of similar chemistry; not a cold-rolled forming grade and not interchangeable in surface or gauge.
DD11EN (European)FunctionalStructural steel of similar chemistry with guaranteed 235 MPa yield and impact; DD11 has no minimum yield guarantee for structural design.
S250GDEN (European)FunctionalUncoated hot-rolled structural steel of similar strength for members that will be post-galvanized.

Identical = same composition and mechanical limits within rounding. Near = one limit differs (e.g. carbon max or impact temperature). Functional = interchangeable for most uses after an engineering check.

How the matches are graded

Identical means the chemical composition windows overlap so that material certified to one specification meets the other without deviation, and the mechanical minimums are the same or the other is inside them — mills usually dual-certify. Near means one limit differs (a carbon maximum, an impact temperature, a strength minimum or a delivery condition) and a substitution needs a one-line engineering check. Functional means the grades serve the same purpose but are not the same steel — a designer can often use one for the other, but only after re-checking the design.
