A53 Grade B equivalent grades: ASTM, EN, JIS, GB, DIN
A53 Grade B is pipe steel for general and structural service, welded or seamless specified in ASTM A53. Every grade in the database that can stand in for it is listed below, drawn from 5 standard systems, each with the reason it does or does not match exactly. The full A53 Grade B data sheet carries the composition and mechanical tables.

A single clause separates A106 Grade B, P235TR1, STPG370: differ either a test temperature or a composition bound that the other does not. Functionally interchangeable, L360 / X52, A36, S195T and 1 more serve a different route to the same duty — check the design, not the analysis. Across systems that is 2 in ASTM / ASME, 2 in EN (European), 1 in JIS (Japan), 1 in API (line pipe), 1 in GB/T (China).
Cross-reference table
| Grade | System | Match | Why / differences |
|---|---|---|---|
| A106 Grade B | ASTM / ASME | Near | Identical strength minima — 240 MPa yield, 415 MPa tensile — but a different specification with a different purpose. A106 is seamless only, requires a **silicon minimum of 0.10 %** so the steel is killed, sets carbon and manganese ranges rather than ceilings, and publishes allowable stresses for high-temperature service. A53 Grade B does none of that. The two are not interchangeable upward: A106 can replace A53, A53 cannot replace A106. |
| P235TR1 | EN (European) | Near | EN 10217-1 P235TR1: 235 MPa minimum yield, 360–500 MPa tensile — the European welded pipe for general service. Slightly lower strength, and TR1 carries no impact requirement while TR2 does; A53 carries none either, which makes TR1 the closer match. |
| STPG370 | JIS (Japan) | Near | JIS G3454 STPG370: 215 MPa minimum yield, 370 MPa minimum tensile, carbon steel pipe for pressure service, welded or seamless. The closest Japanese counterpart to A53 Grade B, a little lower in strength. |
| L360 / X52 | API (line pipe) | Functional | API 5L X52: the line-pipe grade at 360 MPa minimum yield. A53 Grade B is a general-service pipe tested to 60 % of SMYS; X52 is a transmission-pipeline grade with PSL2 chemistry, toughness and weldability requirements A53 does not contain. |
| A36 | ASTM / ASME | Functional | The structural plate and shape specification at 250 MPa yield. Relevant because A53 Grade B pipe is widely used as a structural member — but structural pipe is properly specified to ASTM A500 or A501, not to A53, and the allowable stresses differ. |
| S195T | EN (European) | Functional | EN 10255 S195T: the threadable general-purpose tube used across Europe for water, gas and low-pressure service, at 195 MPa minimum yield. It occupies the same place in the market as galvanized threaded A53, with lighter and heavier series instead of schedules. |
| Q235 | GB/T (China) | Functional | Chinese pipe to GB/T 3091 (galvanized welded pipe for water) and GB/T 8162/8163 is normally rolled from Q235B. Similar carbon and strength level; the pipe specification, grade system and test regime are all different, so a dual stencil to A53 should be confirmed rather than assumed. |
Identical, near and functional are defined once on the grade index; the reason column below says which limit differs in each case.
A53 Grade B in ASTM / ASME
- A106 Grade B — Near Identical strength minima — 240 MPa yield, 415 MPa tensile — but a different specification with a different purpose.
- A36 — Functional The structural plate and shape specification at 250 MPa yield. Relevant because A53 Grade B pipe is widely used as a structural member — but structural pipe is properly specified to ASTM A500 or A501, not to A53, and the allowable stresses differ.
A53 Grade B in EN (European)
- P235TR1 — Near EN 10217-1 P235TR1: 235 MPa minimum yield, 360–500 MPa tensile — the European welded pipe for general service. Slightly lower strength, and TR1 carries no impact requirement while TR2 does; A53 carries none either, which makes TR1 the closer match.
- S195T — Functional EN 10255 S195T: the threadable general-purpose tube used across Europe for water, gas and low-pressure service, at 195 MPa minimum yield. It occupies the same place in the market as galvanized threaded A53, with lighter and heavier series instead of schedules.
A53 Grade B in JIS (Japan)
- STPG370 — Near JIS G3454 STPG370: 215 MPa minimum yield, 370 MPa minimum tensile, carbon steel pipe for pressure service, welded or seamless. The closest Japanese counterpart to A53 Grade B, a little lower in strength.
A53 Grade B in API (line pipe)
- L360 / X52 — Functional API 5L X52: the line-pipe grade at 360 MPa minimum yield. A53 Grade B is a general-service pipe tested to 60 % of SMYS; X52 is a transmission-pipeline grade with PSL2 chemistry, toughness and weldability requirements A53 does not contain.
A53 Grade B in GB/T (China)
- Q235 — Functional Chinese pipe to GB/T 3091 (galvanized welded pipe for water) and GB/T 8162/8163 is normally rolled from Q235B. Similar carbon and strength level; the pipe specification, grade system and test regime are all different, so a dual stencil to A53 should be confirmed rather than assumed.
Superseded names for A53 Grade B
- A53 Grade A / Grade B — ASTM A53, earlier editions: The grade designations have been stable for decades; what has changed is the type list — Type F is now restricted to Grade A and to NPS 4 and smaller.
- API 5L Grade B — API 5L: Not the same specification, but the same strength level. Pipe is frequently dual-certified to A53 Grade B and API 5L Grade B, which is why one length can carry both stencils.
- ASTM A120 — withdrawn: The former specification for black and galvanized welded and seamless pipe for ordinary use; its scope was absorbed into A53.
