Identical = same composition and mechanical limits within rounding. Near = one limit differs (e.g. carbon max or impact temperature). Functional = interchangeable for most uses after an engineering check.

How the matches are graded

Identical means the chemical composition windows overlap so that material certified to one specification meets the other without deviation, and the mechanical minimums are the same or the other is inside them — mills usually dual-certify. Near means one limit differs (a carbon maximum, an impact temperature, a strength minimum or a delivery condition) and a substitution needs a one-line engineering check. Functional means the grades serve the same purpose but are not the same steel — a designer can often use one for the other, but only after re-checking the design.

A36 in IS (India)

  • IS 2062 E250 A — Identical IS 2062 E250 (Fe 410): yield 250 MPa, Rm 410 MPa min, C ≤ 0.23 — the Indian A36.

A36 in ASTM / ASME

  • A283 Gr. C / D — Near Lower-strength plate (205 / 230 MPa yield) for tanks and non-critical structures; Grade D is near A36.
  • A1011 CS / SS Gr 36 — Near Hot-rolled sheet/strip < 6 mm; SS Grade 36 has the same 250 MPa yield in sheet form.
  • A572 Gr. 50Functional HSLA 345 MPa yield — the upgrade for weight-critical shapes; A992 for W-shapes.

Superseded names for A36

  • A7 — ASTM A7 (withdrawn 1967): The predecessor structural steel (33 ksi / 230 MPa yield); A36 replaced it in 1960.
  • K02600 — UNS
  • SA-36 — ASME BPVC Section II: ASME adoption for non-pressure and limited pressure use (e.g. structural attachments, some vessels to 340 °C).
  • Grade 36 — AASHTO M270 / ASTM A709: A709 Grade 36 is the bridge version (with Charpy zones).
  • CSA G40.21 300W — Canada: Canadian equivalent (300 MPa yield, slightly stronger).
