St3sp equivalent grades: ASTM, EN, JIS, GB, DIN
St3sp is carbon structural steel of ordinary quality (GOST / CIS) specified in GOST 380. The cross-reference runs across 6 standard systems and grades every candidate, so the reason a substitution is safe is on the same row as the name. The full St3sp data sheet carries the composition and mechanical tables.

A36, St37-2, S235JR and 4 more differ by one requirement, which is a line on the order rather than a redesign. The table holds 1 in ASTM / ASME, 1 in DIN (superseded German), 2 in EN (European), 1 in GB/T (China), 1 in IS (India), 1 in JIS (Japan).
Cross-reference table
| Grade | System | Match | Why / differences |
|---|---|---|---|
| A36 | ASTM / ASME | Near | A36 is 250 MPa yield and 400–550 MPa tensile — slightly stronger at both ends, with no impact requirement for plate. |
| St37-2 | DIN (superseded German) | Near | DIN 17100 St37-2 is the withdrawn German grade of the same tier; both map onto S235JR and both are still written on drawings. |
| S235JR | EN (European) | Near | The standard counterpart: 245 MPa yield against 235 to the first thickness step, 370–480 MPa tensile against 360–510. St3sp specifies a carbon minimum and states impact as KCU in J/cm², which S235JR does not. |
| s235j0 | EN (European) | Near | St3sp category 4 or 5 is the closer match where low-temperature testing is required — tested at −20 °C, against 0 °C for S235J0. |
| Q235 | GB/T (China) | Near | Q235B: 235 MPa yield, 370–500 MPa tensile, carbon minimum present in both. The two grades occupy the same position in their national systems. |
| E250 | IS (India) | Near | St3sp is 245 MPa yield and 370–480 MPa tensile — the same tier, with mechanical values that come from a separate product standard rather than from the grade standard itself. |
| SS400 | JIS (Japan) | Near | Same strength tier, but SS400 controls only phosphorus and sulphur while St3sp carries a full composition. |
Identical, near and functional are defined once on the grade index; the reason column below says which limit differs in each case.
St3sp in ASTM / ASME
- A36 — Near A36 is 250 MPa yield and 400–550 MPa tensile — slightly stronger at both ends, with no impact requirement for plate.
St3sp in DIN (superseded German)
- St37-2 — Near DIN 17100 St37-2 is the withdrawn German grade of the same tier; both map onto S235JR and both are still written on drawings.
St3sp in EN (European)
- S235JR — Near The standard counterpart: 245 MPa yield against 235 to the first thickness step, 370–480 MPa tensile against 360–510. St3sp specifies a carbon minimum and states impact as KCU in J/cm², which S235JR does not.
- s235j0 — Near St3sp category 4 or 5 is the closer match where low-temperature testing is required — tested at −20 °C, against 0 °C for S235J0.
St3sp in GB/T (China)
- Q235 — Near Q235B: 235 MPa yield, 370–500 MPa tensile, carbon minimum present in both. The two grades occupy the same position in their national systems.
St3sp in IS (India)
- E250 — Near St3sp is 245 MPa yield and 370–480 MPa tensile — the same tier, with mechanical values that come from a separate product standard rather than from the grade standard itself.
St3sp in JIS (Japan)
- SS400 — Near Same strength tier, but SS400 controls only phosphorus and sulphur while St3sp carries a full composition.
Superseded names for St3sp
- St3 — GOST 380 (all editions): The bare grade name without a deoxidation suffix is incomplete; drawings that say only St3 leave the silicon and therefore the weldability open.
- VSt3sp — GOST 380-71 / -88: The В (V) prefix marked steel supplied to both chemical and mechanical requirements — group В. The 2005 edition dropped the prefix and made that the default.
- St3sp5 — GOST 535 (current usage): The trailing digit is the category, which sets the test scope. St3sp5 is the common structural order: killed, tested for impact at −20 °C and after ageing.
